Loughborough Student... Loughborough Students RFC

Loughborough Students secure first victory of the season.

Loughborough Students RFC vs Cambridge RFC

 By Ryan Stevens

After a difficult game against Darlington Mowden Park last week, Loughborough looked to get back to winning ways against Cambridge. Seventeen minutes in, Loughborough secured an early lead with Waters kicking two successful penalties.

The visitor’s impressive defensive in their own 22 ensured Cambridge were denied any chance of taking the lead. Newly appointed Captain Andrew Boyce, led from the front but big performances from pack forwards Leat, Adams, Davis and Frost kept Cambridge at bay.

The weather, best described as poor, was a heavy influence on both teams. Player Will Kaye noted, ‘due to the rain, it doesn’t really lend itself to an expansive game, so the boys will have to keep it very tight’. Loughborough heeded that advice with significant success but a yellow card to Jack Moates and a successful penalty by Cambridge, left Loughborough with only a 3-points lead going into half time.

With improving weather conditions in the second half, the home side started forcing errors from the visitor’s, meaning Cambridge managed to equalise the score with penalise in the 44th and 57th minute. Loughborough fought back and Waters slotted his third penalty kick of the afternoon.

Due to the defensive strength of both sides, a draw seemed to be nailed on with twenty minutes to go. It was Loughborough, howover, whom prevailed: Hirskyj-Douglas took full advantage of the space on the left wing, taking the team in purple back into the lead. Despite a solid kicking display, Waters couldn’t add the two extras.

The last ten minutes saw Cambridge on the offensive, with majority of play in Loughborough’s 22. Luckily, Cambridge couldn’t execute any finishes, leading to Loughborough’s first away victory.
