Loughborough looked to kick of their 2017 campaign with a win but after a shaky first half their prospects looked dull. However, after a re-energised second half they came back from a five-point deficit to lead by eighteen points by the end of the game.

In the first fifteen minutes, Loughborough looked very much on the backfoot as Blaydon’s Grimes and Kalbraier managed to run two tries past the home side. A try in the 20th minute by Olowofela and in the 24th by Currie gave Loughborough a glimmer of hope. After this point, the home side began to suffer at the hands of the referee and eventually Olowofela saw a yellow card.

After half time, the home side came out fired up and ready to play. Tackles were flying in from Lasis, a key influence on the game and good shape in attack saw Loughborough score two minutes in. The next fifteen minutes saw a flurry of tries: three for Loughborough and two for Blaydon one set up by Brett Connon, the visitors stand out player and the other a penalty try at the scrum. Eventually, the home side ran away with the game scoring a further two tries but it was Blaydon who had the last say.

Next week, Loughborough Students face 3rd place Ampthill & District away whilst Blaydon take on 4th place Birmingham Moseley at home.
